What is Yoga and why do I need it?

Yoga, from the Sanskrit “Yuj”, means the yoking together; the joining into union of the mind, body and spirit. Anahata is the Sanskrit word for the heart chakra— the center of the energetic body and origin of peace, healing and love. This art has been part of the human experience for thousands of years. Given the pressures of the modern day world, meditation & yoga have proven to be valuable tools for dealing with stress. We offer experienced instructors that teach the Amrit, Kripalu, Kundalini and Vinyasa styles of yoga, as well as providing classes appropriate for seniors.

Anahata offers comprehensive and authentic training in the ways of yoga and meditation. Through our therapies, you will learn to recognize & release physical & mental tensions, move with greater efficiency & ease, break through the barriers to change, and feel more comfortable & expressive in total body/mind/spirit. You’ll also help your body be more flexible & your “monkey mind” be more relaxed by breathing more efficiently. You’ll learn the ancient ways of yoga, stress management, breath control, stretching, toning & exercise. Our individualized programs also help people with pain management, arthritis, osteoporosis and other medical conditions. We offer daily classes for all levels and a 20% discount for students & seniors are available.

Some of the benefits of a a regular yoga practice are:

  • Improved muscle tone and flexibility
  • Increased range of movement
  • Relieved physical tension
  • Reduced emotional/mental stress
  • Reduced or eliminates back pain
  • Normalized blood pressure
  • Steadied metabolism
  • Purified nervous system
  • Improved digestion
  • A state of relaxation and inner contentment

AYS teachers are committed to providing the highest quality yoga experience for our students.

Message from Tanuja

Dear Friends,

I was recently talking with a friend about a rather intense undertaking she was beginning and she was telling me how much she believed her family was "supporting" her. When I was buying Anahata I had the same experience. People warning me about bankruptcy and how I should do this and that. Our loved ones were supporting us by warning us to worry about consequences, be afraid of being taken advantage of, or taking risks and just generally, in the name of protection and love inspire all kinds of fear.
The thing is, I know that they thought they were being helpful. And I know I've done this millions of times myself. But what continues to occur to me is - how is it helpful to be afraid? Support is supposed to be another version of being loving, and it can be just that, being unconditionally loving. We become so afraid for our loved ones of the things we can't control that we want to save them from pain and heartache, and all we are really doing is in that moment creating pain and heartache. Instead of encouraging them to live their lives the way they want, we stifle them out of our discomfort and fear for them.
So as we enter into the holiday season, the season of love and light, and we greet our families and friends, the people closest to us and yet sometimes the biggest strangers to us, just love them. Support them by loving them regardless of the choices they make or the way they live their lives. Love them for all the things they are, not the things you wish they were.
I wish you all the most beautiful and blessed season of Light!

Love and be loved so fully, so completely and so fearlessly that there is no room for anything else....

Peace and Blessings,

Jai Bhagwan,

Tanuja

About AYS and the Amrit Yoga Institute

"Whether on the yoga mat or off, when we do something that engages our attention totally and fully, we become undivided or whole. This experience of integration, deep relaxation, fulfillment and satisfaction—unity consciousness—is called yoga."

— Yogi Amrit Desai

Anahata Yoga School has recently been designated one of 4 national Amrit Yoga Institutes by Yogi Amrit Desai. Yogi Desai is an internationally recognized authority on yoga and holistic living. He is a descendent of one of the most esoteric and ancient yogic traditions of India - the path of Shaktipat Kundalini Yoga.

Karen Bhakti Platt, founder of AYS and former Director, is one of the senior yoga teachers for the Amrit Yoga Teacher Training and Certification program.

Yogi Desai, or Gurudev as he is known by his students, is the originator of Kripalu yoga and its most recent evolution Amrit Yoga. Amrit Yoga emphasizes the spiritual dimension of yoga and the energetic transmission from teacher to student.
